Alopecia Research
Alopecia research in Australia has been an active arena for years. Research in hair follicle stem cell biology and hair loss research are relatively new fields waiting for breakthroughs to be discovered!
The Australasian Hair and Wool Research Society (AHWRS) is a dedicated organisation supporting scientists and medical researchers who are interested in hair research.
Ongoing alopecia research is still taking place at the University of Melbourne and the Department of Dermatology, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and the Skin and Cancer Foundation of Victoria. Some of these research projects in Australia are carried out in collaboration with other renowned hair researchers worldwide.
Our own Australian gems who are well-known to the hair research community include Professor Rodney Sinclair from the Department of Dermatology, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and Dr Justine Ellis from the Department of Physiology at the University of Melbourne.
Professor Sinclair who is a dermatologist, has authored a few books and textbook chapters on hair disorders, and he has also written many hair research articles in medical journals. His interest and work in all areas of hair research has been internationally recognised by many. Professor Sinclair is currently supervising PhD and MD candidates researching on female pattern hair loss and alopecia areata.
Dr Ellis was the first to discover an association between the androgen receptor gene (this gene helps to regulate androgen metabolism in the hair follicles) and male pattern baldness. This finding proved that male pattern baldness is indeed hormone-related. Dr Ellis' finding has since been replicated three times by different researchers. Dr Ellis is currently supervising PhD candidates researching on genetic associations in male-pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss.
The author of www.alopecia.com.au is currently supervised by both Prof Sinclair and Dr Ellis in her PhD research looking for genetic associations in female pattern hair loss.
